Who is Paddy Bird?
Where can I take this course?
Inside The Edit is 100% online so as long as you have a reliable internet connection you can take the course from anywhere in the world.
How long will it take to complete the course?
This is very much dependent on how much time you spend practising the many concepts and techniques that are taught in The Creative Editing Course. We also highly recommend that you take your time as learning any artistic craft is not something that can be rushed. How long you stay with the course is up to you but we release a new tutorial every week that explores the complexities of narrative editing and builds on the concepts already learnt. The longer you stay, the more you will learn.
Will this course help me get work as an editor, producer or director?
It its widely accepted that editors make the best directors and producers. Someone approaching a production with a background in editing instinctively understands what shots they need to achieve and the best way to get them. Working as an editor provides you with a unique perspective into what works once you get into the cutting room, which is an invaluable skill in production.
Of course, when learning anything, the more you put in, the more you will get out. If you practice cutting as well as watching the tutorials not only will you feel your confidence as an editor growing but you’ll also have a showreel to present to prospective employers.
It is impossible to put together a showreel without access to broadcast standard rushes. This course finally enables people to show their skills by giving them that access. Lastly The Creative Editing Course gives you real hands on experience of a large documentary production. The course emulates exactly what happens out there in the pro world, so when you do get offered a job in television you will feel completely prepared.
Why should I do this course and not another?
There is no course currently on the market, either in book, web or film school form that teaches this level of detail in the craft of creative editing. Most editing courses available only teach you the technical aspects of editing and if they do dip into the craft of creative editing, it is only at a very basic level. Not only does The Creative Editing Course teach you how to cut a high end broadcast documentary it is also taught by a highly sought after and respected editor.
What are the prerequisites for taking this course?
A basic understanding of non linear editing is essential. If you can ingest footage, mark clips, edit them onto the timeline and trim, you’re ready.
Do I need to own my own editing software?
Yes, it is essential that you practice all of the theories and concepts that we teach on your own editing software with the Raw Footage.
Do I have to have a specific editing software?
No. It does not matter which editing software you use but we do recommend that you use one of the three industry standard programs, Avid’s Media Composer, Adobe’s Premiere Pro or Apple’s Final Cut Pro. All three of these are excellent and are used throughout the industry.
Will you be adding new content?
Yes, every week we add a new tutorial. We also add a constant flow of essays, interviews and creative tips.
Do you offer any other type of training?
Not at the moment although we do have several other high end courses in development.
How much Raw Footage do I get on my hard drive?
You get 35 hours, the complete uncut rushes from the documentary Cities At Dawn, which is available to download immediately at low res from The Raw Footage Shop. Both the high and low res codecs are 25fps PAL and can be ingested into any one of the three edit systems currently used by the broadcast industry, Avid’s Media Composer, Adobe’s Premiere Pro and Apple’s Final Cut Pro.
